Plano, Texas is a suburb of Dallas that has earned a reputation as one of the best places to live in the country. In the last 10 years it has been honored 3 times by CNNMoney magazine as the best place to live in the Western United States and once as the 11th best place to live in the U.S. Forbes has twice called it the safest city in America, and it also has been ranked the wealthiest city in the country by both the U.S. Census Bureau and by CNNMoney.
The city is located just 20 miles and about 28 minutes northeast of downtown Dallas, and though it is a suburban setting, it boasts a population of nearly 300,000 and is home to some of the country’s top companies’ corporate headquarters, including Frito Lay, J.C. Penney, and Toyota Motors USA.
History and Development
Plano was first settled in the mid-1840s and got its name for the flat terrain that it is built upon. Though its development was aided by the completion of the Houston and Central Texas Railway, a fire destroyed most of the central business district in 1881, and the entire town needed to be rebuilt.
It wasn’t until the 1970s that the town experienced true growth, and much of that had to do with a public works project that removed farming from the town. By the 1980s, the large corporations that call Plano their home had begun to move in, and the population quickly expanded to its current numbers and wealth.
Visitors to Plano, Texas will find that the city has made transportation easy, with access to air, light rail, public transit, and road transportation. The city is located just half an hour from the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which is serviced by major domestic and international carriers. Love Field is also nearby for those traveling regionally or by private or corporate jet.
Whether you choose to use a driver or one of the rental car agencies located at both airports, you’ll find that the roads serving Plano are easy to access and navigate. The city is also serviced by DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit), a state-of-the-art public transit system that provides light rail, local, and express bus service.
Plano is a vibrant city with a wealth of attractions, cultural events, and activities for all ages and interests. Historic Downtown Plano hosts special events and is the location of a tremendous array of restaurants and shopping as well as theater, music, and art venues.
Southfork Ranch is just a 10-minute drive from Plano Centre and is known as the “world’s most famous ranch” because it was the film location for the hit TV show Dallas.
Those interested in nature and wildlife will enjoy the world-famous Dallas Zoo with its population of endangered tigers; the Dallas World Aquarium and Rainforest; and the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, where you can soak in the beauty of this 200-acre park while enjoying an invigorating jog or hike.
