One of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States, liposuction has been around in various forms for nearly a century. Over the years, medical technologists and plastic surgeons have continually striven to improve results and reduce recovery time for their patients by implementing new equipment and techniques.
Today, one method in particular is widely favored by plastic surgeons: tumescent liposuction. Read below to find out more about the specific benefits of tumescent liposuction, an extremely popular method of surgical fat removal.
1. No General Anesthesia Required
To allow the surgeon to work safely and effectively, many surgical procedures require the use of general anesthesia, inducing the patient into a chemically stimulated sleep. While anesthesia is generally safe, there is always a small risk for complications, and many patients find themselves afterwards dealing with an extended post-op period of nausea.
Tumescent liposuction, however, requires only local anesthesia, and in this way avoids any of the risks associated with general anesthesia. For the procedure, a special solution containing anesthetic drugs is infused directly into the fatty tissue that is being targeted, numbing the entire area and minimizing pain and discomfort while allowing the patient to stay awake.
2. Reduced Risk of Infection
In addition to strong local anesthetic effects, the drugs used to flood the areas targeted during tumescent liposuction also have antibacterial properties, helping to reduce the risk of infections that can take root during a surgical procedure.
This fact, combined with the generally less invasive nature of tumescent liposuction, means that liposuction patients who choose to undergo this kind of procedure can expect fewer complications and will need to take less antibiotics and other prescription medications following their procedure.
3. Less Bleeding, Swelling, and Scarring
One of the biggest benefits of tumescent liposuction is that fact that it yields significantly less bleeding and swelling than comparable methods. This is the result of the specialized anesthetic techniques involved, which help restrict blood flow to the targeted areas and therefore limit the inflammatory processes that would normally accompany an invasive medical procedure.
Additionally, the incisions made during tumescent liposuction are very small, allowing for minimal scarring as well as very precise “liposculpting” when performed by a well-trained and experienced plastic surgeon.
4. Shorter Recovery Time
Since tumescent liposuction is less invasive and more precise than other methods of liposuction, the tissue damage that results from tumescent liposuction procedures is also reduced, allowing for faster recovery times that can be as short as a single day for minor procedures. Additionally, due to the infusion of anesthetic drugs directly into the targeted tissue, there is only minimal pain for the first 36 hours following the procedure. With tumescent liposuction, the procedure has never been so easy.
