Because of the popularity of breast augmentation, the techniques and technologies used in the procedure are constantly being updated, improved, and expanded. The latest and, by far, most exciting development is the newly FDA approved Gummy Bear breast implants. The Gummy Bear implant, which has only been in active use since 2012, attempts to give patients the most natural looking breasts possible.
To bring you up to speed on the Gummy Bear craze, we cover the most important facts about these new implants.
Why “Gummy Bear”?
The name might seem a bit silly, but there is a good reason for it. A more technical term for the new implant style is “form stable,” which means that the material used in these implants will hold its shape over time. So, like the gummy bear candy, these implants have a distinct shape maintained by the thicker consistency of the gel from which they are made. As such, these “cohesive gel” implants differ quite significantly in feel from either saline or silicone implants, which have a more liquid consistency.
What is the Advantage?
In some cases, surgically augmented breasts can have a protrusive or “gravity defying” appearance caused by the round shape of the underlying implant. Gummy Bear breast implants was developed to specifically address this issue, giving augmented breasts a more natural shape and contour by filling out the bottom of the breast. Clinical trials ongoing since 2006 also show that the durability of these implants may be improved compared to other materials.
Are There any Downsides?
The same features that make Gummy Bear implants ideal for some patients may make them a poor choice for others. Patients who want a higher-profile look with more roundness at the top of the breast will probably prefer a more traditional saline or silicone implant. Depending on the techniques used, Gummy Bear implant surgery can also be a bit more invasive and may require additional follow up visits to the surgeon.
Are Gummy Bear implants right for me?
The best way to decide whether to choose Gummy Bear breast implants—or any form of breast augmentation—is to consult with your cosmetic surgeon. Board certified surgeons are familiar with all types of breast implants and will be able to make a well-informed suggestion following your consultation. Be sure to consider your goals for surgery before you visit, including the size, shape, and overall look you want to achieve. Although it can be a bit overwhelming, the advantage of having so many options is that there is almost always a way to get the results you want.
