How Can an IPL Photofacial Help Me?

If you’ve noticed that blemishes and darkened spots have begun to develop on your face you’re not alone. Many people develop unflattering discolorations and blotches as they age, a natural process that occurs when the skin produces too much melanin, usually as a result of too much sun exposure and UV light from other sources. These spots can make you look older than you really are and cause you embarrassment. Thankfully, an IPL photofacial can help you erase the signs of aging from your face.

At North Texas Plastic Surgery, our board-certified, Harvard-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Sacha Obaid is proud to offer some of the most advanced methods and techniques to help you look and feel your best. One of these services is an IPL photofacial to help rejuvenate your skin and help reduce and eliminate a number of conditions on your face and elsewhere on your body.

IPL photofacials use intense pulsed light, which is high-energy light waves, to not only reduce blemishes on the face but to help the skin’s natural production of collagen. Collagen is the natural substance in the skin which helps keep it smooth and tight. In recent years, IPL photofacials have been a popular choice for those looking to get rid of embarrassing spots and blemishes. According to stats from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 667,561 IPL procedures were performed in 2017 in the U.S.

This procedure can help treat a number of skin issues, including:

  • Blemishes and discoloration on the skin (sun spots)
  • Visible signs of aging (age spots and freckles)
  • Spider veins
  • Acne
  • Pigment problems like broken capillaries and rosacea
  • Hemangiomas (a benign tumor of blood vessels that forms a red birthmark)

At our office, we use the Lumenis® M22™ IPL which is an FDA-approved, clinically-proven method to reduce and treat issues with the skin. Not only is it safe and gentle, it can be adjusted to many different skin types and colors. The process itself takes only about 45 minutes to complete and uses its light pulses to treat the skin by generating heat in the targeted areas.

Once completed, the skin in the treated area flakes off as the body’s own natural exfoliating process begins. The pulsed light also has the added benefit of stimulating the skin’s collagen and elastic fibers, creating a visible improvement in your overall tone and appearance.

As with any procedure, it’s important to talk with your doctor to make sure that the treatment you seek is safe for you. Dr. Obaid will determine your candidacy for this procedure during your complimentary consultation. While the IPL photofacial treatment is generally safe for most adults, there are certain factors, such as poor health or pregnancy, that may inhibit you from receiving this treatment.
