The Secrets to a Youthful Appearance Aren’t What You Think

A slender, fit body is highly desirable for many people. New diets and celebrity weight-loss stories are in every issue of the most popular magazines, and models are regularly Photoshopped to look thinner. While being thin doesn’t always mean that you are healthy, there’s another problem with this that many people don’t realize: Being very thin can also be aging.

What does youth look like?

Look at your son or daughter, your niece or nephew, or any other young person. It’s easy to see that certain features give them a more youthful appearance:

  • Bright eyes
  • Full cheeks
  • A lack of lines around the eyes, lips, and forehead
  • A smooth neck, chest, and hands

Being thin could age you!

When you’re young, your skin has lots of collagen in it. This gives it an elastic quality and helps keep it firm and tight. Loss of collagen as you age is one reason you start to look older, but it’s not the only reason. Sometimes being thin or losing lots of weight can make you look older too. This particularly seems to be the case for women over the age of 40.

Why is this the case? Having a thick layer of fat beneath the skin fills out hollows and lines, making them less visible. If you lose weight, you’ll likely lose fat from your face as well as from your body. This loss of facial volume makes those hollows and lines look deeper.

You don’t need to gain weight to look younger, of course. While the extra weight might fill out your face, it also means you may end up carrying more weight than you want to (or should) in other areas of your body.

How can you look more youthful?

Gaining weight to make your face look plumper and younger isn’t a good option unless you’re actually underweight. Fortunately, most of the hallmarks of aging can be reduced or reversed with cosmetic procedures.

Wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes, lips, and forehead

Fine lines and wrinkles can be very aging, even if your face is otherwise youthful in appearance. Luckily, there’s a quick and simple fix that can smooth out fine lines and reduce the appearance of deeper wrinkles too. Skin fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® can fill out those fine lines and deep-set wrinkles. While they may not disappear completely, their appearance will be greatly reduced.

Depending on your needs and preferences, BOTOX® may be another good option. BOTOX can be great for smoothing out deep-set wrinkles and lines in your forehead and between your eyes and for crow’s feet around your eyes as well.

Hollows in the temples or cheeks

If your face is naturally thin, you may not have a problem with sagging skin due to the loss of facial volume. A thin face may still have hollows in the cheeks and temples that contribute to an aged appearance. Skin fillers are an ideal way to add volume to these hollow-looking areas. One treatment—which typically takes only a few minutes—can make an improvement that lasts well over a year. And with a single booster dose, the effect can last up to three years.

While these procedures can give results that last for months or even years, there are other options for longer-lasting results. For example, it’s possible to remove fat from elsewhere on your body—such as your waist, hips, or thighs—and use it to add volume to your facial area. This is called a fat transfer. Because your own fat is used, the results don’t wear off over time, so this is a good option if you want to make a permanent change.

Sagging skin around the eyes and mouth

If your face looks thinner and older because you’ve lost weight, it may be that losing fat from your face has made the skin sag in some areas. Skin fillers are a good option here, as they can quickly and easily replace the volume that was lost. Fillers like JUVÉDERM and Restylane can add volume to plump up skin that has become saggy around the eyes, lips, chin, and jowls. These fillers are also useful for plumping up the deep parallel lines that can develop on either side of the mouth. In some cases, BOTOX can also be used to reduce the appearance of these lines.

Around the eyes, sagging skin can contribute to an older appearance and can make you look less alert. If you have lots of sagging, loose skin in this area, fillers and BOTOX aren’t always the right choices. A surgical procedure called a blepharoplasty may work better. In this procedure the excess skin of the eyelid is removed surgically. Sometimes the muscles that control the eyelid might be tightened too. These changes make the eyes look more open and alert and help the whole face appear younger!
