Patients in Fort Worth who believe they may require a breast implant removal should discuss it with one of our elite plastic surgeons. As your life changes, you may feel that your breast implants no longer suit you. They could feel too big for your current look or you may have shifted to wanting a more “natural” look again.
Though extremely rare, an implant can move out of place, causing your breast shape to change. You will not be able to move the implant back into position yourself, so it may be desirable to remove them altogether.
Sometimes breast implant removal is about more than just aesthetics—it is medically necessary due to a rupture, the type of implant used, or your body’s reaction to the implants.
If a hole develops in the outer shell of your silicone breast implant, some of the silicone filling can slowly leak out. Signs of a ruptured breast implant include:
While this is not an emergency, Fort Worth patients experiencing the signs and symptoms of a ruptured breast implant should consider removing it. After removal, you can talk with our team about whether to have a new implant placed.
Luckily, newer formulations of silicone used in breast implants do not tend to leak and rarely shift out of the soft tissue capsule your body forms around the implant.
If a hole develops in the outer shell of your saline-filled breast implant, you will usually notice a rapid change in breast shape. Saline (salt water) will be rapidly released from the implant, but it is unlikely to cause problems because your body will absorb the saline without any difficulties. You can then choose to remove both implants.
Breast implant illness (BII) presents with many symptoms that can include autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren’s disease. Other nonspecific problems can occur, such as rashes, fatigue, or memory problems. To date, there is still not enough evidence to support that breast implants are the cause of these problems, but you might choose to have your implants removed if you suspect they are affecting your health.
Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare form of lymphoma caused by textured-surface breast implants. Because BIA-ALCL follows a relatively indolent course in most patients, it may not be diagnosed quickly. Most cases present about 10 years after implant placement. If you notice any new lumps or large swelling near your implant, these should be investigated to rule out BIA-ALCL.
The formation of a soft tissue capsule around your implants is a part of normal healing. Your body wants to isolate this foreign object from the rest of your body. Normally, this capsule stays flexible and relatively unnoticeable. It even helps keep the implant in place.
Sometimes, the capsule will start to abnormally harden and thicken. Mild forms of capsular contracture usually do not cause problems that require implant and capsule removal. If the condition progresses and causes chronic pain, you will want to have the implant and abnormal capsule removed. If you wish, a new implant can be placed; however, there is a risk of capsular contracture re-occurrence.
Approximately 75 percent of all capsular contractures occur during the first two years after implant placement, but may occur at any time, especially if there is rupture of the implant.
