Southlake/Plano plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Ver Halen is a board-certified plastic surgeon who trained at Harvard Medical School, the University of Washington, and the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He combines his aesthetic sense and surgical techniques to his Dallas/Fort Worth-area plastic surgery practice.
Dr. Ver Halen joined Dr. Obaid and North Texas Plastic Surgery in 2016. Before his career in plastic surgery, Dr. Ver Halen grew up in Southern California with his parents and three brothers.
Dr. Ver Halen attended Servite High School in Anaheim, California, where he earned numerous academic and athletic awards. He matriculated to the University of California at Los Angeles, where he double majored in English Literature and Biochemistry, while again balancing his passion for academic study with athletics. He ultimately earned varsity letters in swimming and crew, and earned a position on the U.S. Men’s National Lightweight Crew team. His academic career was similarly distinguished, as he graduated with College Honors, Magna Cum Laude, awards for Excellence in Biochemistry, and a number of grants (including an Ahmanson Fellowship in Humanities, and the Dunn Prize for Excellence in Biochemistry).
Dr. Ver Halen was accepted into Harvard Medical School with an academic scholarship, and earned degrees from both Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While there, he performed cutting-edge research in transplantation immunology and received awards from the National Science Foundation, Harvard Medical School, and the MIT Annual Entrepreneur Competition. He was profoundly influenced by his instructors, and ultimately decided to pursue a career in plastic surgery.
Dr. Ver Halen attended the University of Washington for residency training, where he received training in all aspects of plastic surgery. He was instructed by some of the masters of plastic surgery in breast surgery, body contouring, liposuction, and facial cosmetic surgery. He was also profoundly influenced by patients undergoing surgery for cancer, in particular women with breast cancer.
The Start of a Career
His passion for helping patients took Dr. Ver Halen to Houston, Texas, where Dr. Ver Halen pursued extra training in microvascular surgical reconstruction at the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also took on special responsibilities as a Clinical Specialist, to give him further opportunities to refine his techniques. The finesse and delicacy of these surgical procedures built upon his already exceptional surgical training, and crystallized his ability to improve and perfect the human body.
Where Is He Now?
Dr. Ver Halen is well known nationally and internationally for his skill, insight and creativity in plastic surgery. He has established himself as a clinician and researcher, and holds numerous editorial positions in peer-reviewed medical journals. In addition, he has also held numerous teaching roles. He takes pride in being a surgeon "that teaches other surgeons how to operate."
He has had the privilege of speaking at countless meetings, including the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and American Society for Reconstructive Surgery, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and numerous other groups. Dr. Ver Halen lives in Dallas with his family. He is a loving father and member of the community. He frequently donates his time to local charities, including patient support groups such as the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, held annually to recognize the importance of breast reconstruction after treatment for breast cancer. He is a sports enthusiast, and has completed two full length Ironman races amongst other ongoing interests.
Dr. Ver Halen’s innate surgical acumen, skills, and training qualify him to care for his patients. His goal is to provide individualized patient results in the safest possible setting.
