Causes of Gynecomastia in Dallas

Causes of Gynecomastia in Dallas

Gynecomastia is a medical condition in which male patients experience excess, unwanted breast tissue, which makes their chests appear more feminine. Gynecomastia can be emotionally challenging for our patients, causing feelings of shame, low self-esteem, and lower quality of life. Fortunately, it does not have to be this way.

We will discuss some of the most common causes of gynecomastia in Dallas. If you are interested in male breast reduction, one of our qualified plastic surgeons can talk with you about your specific case and treatment options.

What Causes Gynecomastia in Men?

Men can experience gynecomastia for many reasons.

In adolescent and pubescent boys, gynecomastia is usually a side effect of the hormonal changes brought on by puberty. Male puberty causes imbalances in estrogen and testosterone, which can result in the formation of breast buds in these patients. In many cases, gynecomastia in pre-teen and adolescent boys will disappear naturally after a year or so as hormones even out. Rarely does gynecomastia persist after puberty in younger boys.

Medical Causes

Gynecomastia occurs in up to 65% of adult men and is typically more serious and persistent than in adolescents. It can be caused by another underlying medical condition, such as:

  • Obesity
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Thyroid disease
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Liver damage, particularly liver cirrhosis
  • Issues with hormonal and reproductive glands and organs, including the pituitary gland, adrenal gland, or testicles
  • Substance abuse, including alcohol, marijuana, heroin, performance-enhancing drugs, and methamphetamine abuse
  • Use of certain medications, such as steroidal medications, heart medications, anti-androgen drugs, cancer and chemotherapy drugs, medications used to treat ulcers, and anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications

Each of these factors can cause gynecomastia because they lead to hormonal imbalance, particularly estrogen and testosterone hormone imbalances. This is also compounded by age, since older men lose hormone production and balancing abilities. These hormonal imbalances cause the breast tissue to swell and expand, leading to an enlarged, feminine appearance.

Mental and Emotional Effects of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can also make you feel emotionally and psychologically distressed. It can cause feelings of discomfort and shame and can prevent people from living fulfilling social and romantic lives. No matter the cause of your gynecomastia, our talented Dallas surgeons can use the latest techniques to shape a more natural-looking chest and restore your self-esteem.

Treatment for Gynecomastia

The good news is, we have a surgical procedure to address excessive male breast tissue. It removes unwanted skin, fat, and tissue in the breast, making the area appear smaller and more masculine, and defining the chest area overall. This surgery can be very beneficial psychologically for our male patients, helping them feel comfortable and confident in their body again.
