What Is Craniofacial Surgery for Children?
Craniofacial surgery is a subspecialization of plastic surgery that is dedicated to treating children born with facial differences. It requires a rigorous formal training that extends beyond that of the standard plastic surgery training. There are only a handful of formally fellowship trained and dedicated craniofacial surgeons in the United States. These surgeons specialize in treating children with cleft lip and cleft palate and more rare genetic and congenital anomalies, including:
- Apert’s Syndrome
- Crouzon’s Syndrome
- Pfeiffer’s Syndrome
- Treacher Collins Syndrome
- Pierre Robin Sequence
- Hemifacial Microsomia
- Craniofacial Microsomia
- Goldenhaar’s Syndrome
From the time Dr. Sacha Obaid was just beginning his training at Harvard Medical School, he knew that he wanted to improve the lives of children with facial differences. This is the reason that Dr. Obaid chose to study plastic surgery. Helping these children has been the driving force behind his career for many years.
Specialized Pediatric Facial Surgery Training
After completing his training in plastic surgery at UT Southwestern, Dr. Obaid knew he had to study more to master the art of craniofacial surgery. He continued on to the world famous Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University to apprentice under one of the founding fathers of craniofacial surgery in the United States, Dr. Joseph McCarthy.
Dr. Obaid has quickly gained a reputation for his skill and dedication to the art of craniofacial surgery. He has written texts to educate other plastic surgeons on topics including lengthening and improving the facial bones and jaw. He has been invited to speak at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Cleft Palate Association, and the International Society of Craniofacial Surgeons on his cleft lip and palate and craniofacial reconstruction research.
Dr. Obaid and his team are dedicated to taking care of the children of Dallas, Fort Worth, all of North Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana who live with facial differences. Dr. Obaid and his staff are committed to taking a team approach to helping your child with assistance from speech therapy, orthodontics, genetics, neurosurgery, ENT, psychiatry, and dentistry.
