NORTH TEXAS PLASTIC SURGEON’S WORK RECEIVES NATIONAL ACCLAIM AND PUBLICATION
Dr. Sacha Obaid presents experience on groundbreaking new surgery in plastic surgery textbook.
Southlake, TX (PRWEB) July 15, 2010 —Dr. Sacha Obaid, plastic surgeon and founder of North Texas Plastic Surgery, www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com , recently presented his surgical procedure on mandibular distraction to plastic surgeons across the United States in a book recently released entitled Plastic Surgery Secrets Plus. Dr. Obaid is the first and only surgeon to perform the surgery in Fort Worth.
Mandibular distraction is performed to correct a naturally small jaw. Having a small jaw forces the tongue back into the throat and makes breathing very difficult. This is typically repaired by performing a tracheotomy, which creates a hole in the patient’s throat and allows him/her to breathe with the help of a tube. Dr. Obaid’s revolutionary new procedure has changed the face of this disease for children across the metroplex.
Instead of starting out life breathing through a hole in their neck, children with this disorder are instead having Dr. Obaid lengthen their jaws as infants, allowing them to leave the hospital breathing and looking no different than any other child.
In a mandibular distraction, a patient’s jaw is outfitted with a custom made device and a collection of tiny screws. After implantation, a key is turned each day to expand the mandible and help grow new bone. This treatment lasts for approximately three to four weeks depending on the patient’s specific case. At the end, children with small jaws look no different than their counterparts and they can breathe safely, easily and often for the first time without any assistance.
“It is essential that plastic surgeons across the country and world study this procedure,” said Dr. Obaid, “ as it has the potential to transform the lives of children with this condition. Breathing through a hole in the neck places a tremendous strain on the child and the parents. This operation can often eliminate this need.”
Small jaw has several names, including Pierre Robin Syndrome, micrognathia or “small jaw,” hemifacial microsmia and Nager syndrome. Pierre Robin Syndrome occurs in one out of every 8,500 to 30,000 children and small jaw occurs in one out of every 1,600 children.
Plastic Surgery Secrets Plus is on sale now though Mosby Elsevier and can be found online and in medical book retailers across the country. For more information or to see videos of children who have had this surgery please visit www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com.

NEW WEBSITE IS DEDICATED TO 3-DIMENSIONAL PLASTIC SURGERY EDUCATION
North Texas Plastic Surgeon Committed to Educating Patients on Options
Southlake, TX (PRWEB) June 30, 2010 –As we enter a new decade, plastic surgery is again on the rise. A recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that despite the poor economy cosmetic procedures are up 69% since 2000! Nonetheless, there is growing concern that patients are not being properly informed of their options. To help educate patients, a unique website has been launched www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com that is dedicated to patient information. It will feature 3D animations of all the procedures performed by Dr. Sacha Obaid in an effort to educate patients about their bodies and options.
“There are so many options available to plastic surgery patients today”, says Dr. Sacha Obaid medical director of North Texas Plastic Surgery, www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com . “Many of these options involve surgery and down time, but many do not. In fact many are office based procedures with little to no down time. Before a patient undergoes surgery, it is critical that he or she understands all the options available to them and what is going to be done for them. These 3D animations bring surgery to life and we hope they will give our patients the best understanding possible.”
While the information presented on the website may be overwhelming at times, it will raise the awareness and confidence in patients undergoing plastic surgery. Patients will then be able to ask informed and important questions and make the best decisions for them. For more information or to view the 3 dimensional images for yourself, please visit www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com.

SURGEONS CREATE PALATE FOR BABY WITH RARE FACIAL ABNORMALITY
Third surgery performed to implant prosthetics, enable speech
Southlake, TX (PRWEB) December 14, 2009 — Dr. Sacha Obaid, North Texas plastic and craniofacial surgeon (https://www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com/pediatric-procedures-southlake/), www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com announced the successful operation to rebuild the facial structure of eleven-month-old John Tre “JT” Barbour at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. JT was born with an extremely rare facial condition that he shares with only four other people in the world. The condition involved clefts on both side of his face involving his lips, cheeks, eyelids, cheek bones, eye sockets and eyes. The five-hour surgery involved recreating the roof of JT’s mouth, and replacing implants for his eyes.
Dr. Obaid performed JT’s third reconstruction surgery to recreate the roof of his mouth, the goal of which is to allow JT to be able to eat normally and begin to speak. During the second part of the operation, Dr. Obaid also changed JT’s initial prostheses to continue expanding the bone around JT’s eyes and the overlying eyelids. This procedure will ultimately allow for permanent prostheses to be made, making it difficult to detect that JT does not have real eyes.
“This was major surgery for JT, and he is doing amazingly well,” says Dr. Obaid, medical director of North Texas Plastic Surgery. “He hasn’t been able to speak because he needed the roof of his mouth to form words. Now, our hope is he will start saying all the words his parents have been teaching him, and that he will be able to eat a tasty Thanksgiving meal.” JT has been released from the hospital and will complete his recovery at home, just outside of Waco, Texas, with his mother, Katie Barbour, and father, US army veteran John Laura.
JT was born with a total facial cleft, affecting both sides of his face. The condition is so rare that only four other children in the world have been diagnosed with this abnormality. It’s called a Bilateral Tessier #4 Facial Cleft, and J.T.’s cleft is so severe that it extended from his lips up through his jaw, cheeks, and into his eye sockets, causing him to go blind.

SURGEONS CORRECT EYE STRUCTURE OF BABY BORN WITH RARE FACIAL CLEFT
Dr. Sacha Obaid, North Texas Plastic Surgeon and Craniofacial Surgeon, successfully completed the surgery to help rebuild the eye structure of ten-month-old.
Southlake, Texas (PRWEB) August 31, 2009 — Dr. Sacha Obaid, North Texas Plastic Surgeon and Craniofacial Surgeon, successfully completed the surgery to help rebuild the eye structure of ten-month-old John Tre “JT” Barbour, on August 14, at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. The three hour surgery is the second of many corrective operations Dr. Obaid’s team has planned for J.T. before he turns five.
JT was born with a rare facial anomaly, called a Bilateral Tessier #4 Facial Cleft, that has been diagnosed in only four other children in the world. He was born with a face that was separated into three pieces with skin, fat, and muscle missing from his lips, cheeks, eyelids, eyes and missing bones in his upper jaw, cheeks, and around his eyes.
During the surgery, Dr. Obaid and Dr. Matthew Hammons, removed JT’s underdeveloped eyes and placed prostheses that will overtime expand the bone around JT’s eyes and the overlying eyelids. This combination will ultimately allow for permanent prostheses to be made that will make it difficult to detect that JT does not have eyes.
This surgery follows a total facial reconstruction performed in May to rebuild JT’s lips, cheeks, and eyelids. A third surgery this year is planned for November to recreate the roof of JT’s mouth, the goal of which will be to allow JT to be able to eat and speak normally.
“JT is recovering well from the surgery,” says Dr. Obaid, medical director of North Texas Plastic Surgery, www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com “We want to give him, and his parents, a chance to rest in between the series of surgeries to ensure the most successful outcome.”
JT was released from the hospital on August 15, and is recovering at home, just outside of Waco, Texas, with his mother, Katie Barbour, and father, John Laura.

ARE BREAST CANCER PATIENTS BEING PROPERLY INFORMED?
North Texas Plastic Surgeon Committed to Informing Women of Options
Southlake, TX (PRWEB) August 27, 2009 — Despite the increase of breast reconstruction procedures performed in 2008, nearly 70 percent of women who are eligible for the procedure are not informed of the reconstructive options available to them, according to a recently published report! Newly released statistics by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows there were more than 79,000 breast reconstruction procedures performed in 2008 – a 39 percent increase over 2007. But in spite of this, current research suggests that many breast cancer patients are missing out on a key conversation that should take place at the time of diagnosis.
“Women with breast cancer are faced with many tough decisions”, says Dr. Sacha Obaid medical director of North Texas Plastic Surgery, www.northtexasplasticsurgery.com . “It is absolutely critical that at the time of diagnosis, women with breast cancer be referred to a team of specialists including a breast surgeon, an oncologist, a radiation oncologist, and a board certified plastic surgeon. While the information presented may be overwhelming, it is critical that women know that they can be made whole again. They also must know that the road to rebuilding their body can begin the same day as the surgery to remove their tumor. Unfortunately, many women are not presented these options.”
Taking the position that every woman deserves the right to choose which, if any reconstruction option is best for her, North Texas Plastic Surgery is launching an ongoing effort to bring public awareness to breast reconstruction issues, including education, access, and a team approach. In the coming months, Dr. Obaid’s team will reach out through a variety of materials, ranging from direct mail pieces to physicians specializing in women’s care, online breast reconstruction information, online breast reconstruction question and answers, brochures to be displayed in primary care offices, and a lecture series.
“My goal is to make sure that every woman given the diagnosis of breast cancer in the United States is presented every option available. That way she can make the best decision for her.”

NORTH TEXAS PLASTIC SURGEON PRESENTS PROCEDURE TO AREA PHYSICIANS
Dr. Sacha Obaid recently presented his surgical procedure on mandibular distraction to area physicians.
Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) June 3, 2009 — Dr. Sacha Obaid, plastic surgeon and founder of North Texas Plastic Surgery, recently presented his surgical procedure on mandibular distraction to area physicians.
In this particular case, however, Obaid saved an infant girl at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth from having a tracheotomy by performing a mandibular distraction.
In a mandibular distraction, a patient’s jaw is outfitted with a mandible device and a collection of pins. After implantation, a key is turned each day to expand the mandible and help grow new bone. This treatment lasts for approximately three to four weeks depending on the patient’s specific case.
“I am of the belief that I have been given a lot of gifts,” said Obaid. “I feel like I owe something to the community to change these baby’s lives.”
Prior to birth the child had been given up for adoption. However, when the adoptive parents saw her condition, they refused the adoption. Thanks to Obaid’s surgical assistance, the girl was later adopted to another couple.
Small jaw has several names, including Pierre Robin Syndrome, micronathia or “small jaw,” hemi facial microsmia and nager syndrome. Pierre Robin Syndrome occurs in one out of every 8,500 to 30,000 children and small jaw occurs in one out of every 1,600 children.
