In recent years, more men have been using BOTOX® Cosmetic, or “Brotox,” to reduce lines and wrinkles on their face. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 447,000 men had Brotox performed in 2016, a 376% increase since the year 2000. The reason for the rise in BOTOX® for men has been attributed to an ever-increasing competitive job market and the desire to project a youthful and energetic appearance, according to a recent study in the journal Cosmetic Dermatology.
At North Texas Plastic Surgery, we understand the motivation to look and feel your best, that’s why we offer BOTOX® for men to lessen the signs of aging on the face. Our experienced injectables specialist uses her knowledge and skills to help you have a smoother, more youthful complexion.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a dermal filler that works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles, effectively reducing their appearance and giving the treated area a smoother, tighter look and feel. BOTOX® Cosmetic is derived from botulinum toxin type A, a bacterium-produced neuromuscular toxin that has been deemed safe for use as a facial injectable by the FDA.
The lines and wrinkles on your face are largely caused by the repetitive motion of muscles when used for various facial expressions. These lines, wrinkles, and folds are temporary at first, but over time, they can become more permanent. Genetics, family history, and lifestyles such as smoking, and excessive sun exposure also factor into the wrinkle creation process.
BOTOX® Cosmetic can help men who are looking to smooth areas of the face and head, including:
- Smile lines
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Forehead lines
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-surgical procedure and there is little to no recovery time after, making it safe to have multiple injections performed. Because this treatment is non-invasive it’s much less risky than other plastic surgery options. Results can be seen within about a week and generally last from three to six months.
How is BOTOX® Different for Men?
As Brotox becomes more popular each year, it’s important to understand that there are subtle differences in how BOTOX® Cosmetic works between men and women. While it’s just as safe for men as it is for women and the results are the same, the way in which it is administered and the techniques used vary somewhat. Some of the differences include:
- Men need more: Because men have more muscle in their forehead, it generally takes more of the product to achieve the desired results than it does for women. On average women generally require 30-50 units of BOTOX® Cosmetic whereas men generally require 50-80 units.
- Difference in brow shape: One of the most important things for natural-looking BOTOX® is the brow shape. Obtaining an aesthetically-pleasing brow shape is key for both men and women. Women tend to have a gentle arch for their brow while men generally have a lower, straighter brow line.
- Precision in technique: Because of the difference in brow shape, it takes a highly-trained individual to deliver the precise amount in the right locations to achieve optimal results for both men and women. Men also tend to have higher hairlines than women which require BOTOX® to be administered higher and more accurately to produce natural-looking results.
Because of these slight differences between the sexes, we recommend having your Brotox performed by a trusted injectables specialist so that you can get the best results.
Brotox for Underarm Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Excessive underarm sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, is an embarrassing condition that can cause uncomfortable situations due to constant sweating and the foul odor that may emanate from it. This condition is the result of hyperactive sweat glands which cannot be treated with over-the-counter antiperspirants or products. Research shows that nearly 2-3% of the population in the U.S. suffers from excessive underarm sweating.
Fortunately, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been approved by the FDA as a solution to excessive sweating. It offers many benefits for tackling this embarrassing condition. Benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic for excessive sweating include:
- Immediate relief
- Completely eliminates excessive sweating and odor
- No negative side effects
- Can easily be maintained with repeat injections
- Does not require surgery or any downtime
- More cost-effective than other treatments
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been shown to have an 82-87% decrease in underarm sweating with results lasting from 4 to 12 months.
BOTOX® Cosmetic was first approved by the FDA for treating facial wrinkles and creases in 2002. FDA approval is a major indicator that BOTOX® Cosmetic is safe and does not lead to long-term paralysis or other bodily harm.
Since Brotox has become a popular procedure among men over recent years, it’s important to know that side-effects are generally rare, but are possible. Some of the minor side-effects include:
- Allergic reactions
- Swelling in treatment area
- Muscle weakness
While the side-effects are generally rare, BOTOX® Cosmetic is not safe for everyone. It’s advised to skip this procedure if you have a neuromuscular disorder or are suffering from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. A thorough evaluation of your candidacy for Brotox will be completed during your consultation to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.
