9 Triggers That Will Slow Your Metabolism

Looking for a metabolism boost? Don’t believe the hype over miracle products. Weight-loss surgery and weight training are the only two things you can do to truly increase your metabolism. There are factors that can slow down your metabolism, however, which are highlighted here. Not to fear, though! You can fight these triggers, maintain a healthy metabolism, and even reverse a decline in metabolism.

Hormone levels can slow your metabolism. A lack of estrogen receptors in your brain as you get older can cause you to gain weight even if you aren’t consuming more calories. On average, people may put on an additional 10% of weight every 10 years due to hormonal changes in their bodies.

Another reason our metabolism declines as we age is that testosterone levels in both men and women decrease with age. Testosterone regulates muscle mass and growth. The lower your testosterone levels , the harder it can be to gain and maintain muscle.

Stress is another metabolism trigger. Stress levels cause cortisol to increase, which can wreak havoc on your metabolism. Raised levels of cortisol due to stress can cause you to stress eat, and the spike in caloric intake will also cause you to gain weight.
