Morning Routine: 7 Tips to Get Up and Out the Door!

Having a good morning routine is a great way to start every day off on the right foot. Use these quick-and-easy tips to simplify your morning routine and start every day with less stress.

1. Don’t hit the snooze button.

The temptation to hit snooze and stay in bed for just 5 more minutes is one that’s never easy to resist, but every hit of the button is 5 or 10 minutes down the drain. If hitting snooze is an integral part of your morning routine, you have two options for solving this problem: Set your alarm earlier to make up for your snooze habit, or leave it far away from bed the night before, so you have to get out of bed to turn it off.

2. Pick out clothes the night before.

This can save you a good chunk of time in the morning, not to mention that frazzled feeling you get when you can’t decide what to wear. Make those decisions the night before—including underwear, accessories, and shoes—and lay the clothes on a chair, so they’re in easy reach. Pick out exercise clothes, too, if your daily routine includes a jog or a stop at the gym.

3. Set up breakfast (and lunch) in advance.

Prepare and set out breakfast foods and tableware the night before. For example, cut up fruit to go on top of your cereal, lay out a place setting, and set up the coffee maker so it’s ready to go with the press of a button. Even better, get a coffee maker that starts on a timer, so you can wake up to freshly brewed coffee every morning.

Keep the preparedness going by making lunch the night before. This is a great way to save money as well as time.

4. Avoid distractions.

Mornings are even more crowded with things to do now that it’s so easy to check email or Facebook on a mobile device, but those distractions can easily leave you running late. Designate five minutes at breakfast for checking email if you need to. Better yet, avoid digital distractions altogether. You’ll have plenty of time for them at work or in the evening.

5. Look good in less time.

Streamlining your morning routine can give you a little extra time to spend making yourself look good before you head out in the morning, boosting your self-esteem so that you feel confident all day.

Make it even easier by clearing your bathroom of old, expired, or unused products and ensuring everything you use is in reach. If you find yourself spending a long time on your hair each day, consider a lower-maintenance cut, or choose a style that’s easy to arrange and wears well.

If you wear makeup, simplify your beauty routine as much as possible. Switch out foundation for a BB cream or tinted moisturizer, for example. If you routinely use mascara or brow color, having your lashes or brows professionally tinted can be a great, time-saving alternative.

6. Don’t waste time hunting for essentials.

Dedicate a space in your entrance area for bags, coats, umbrellas, and other items, so you can grab them on the go. An easy way to do this is to simply install a hook or two for large items and use a bowl or tray on an entryway table for keys, phone chargers, wallets, and other small but important bits and pieces.

7. Remind yourself with a quick note.

Got something important to do in the morning or an item that you need to take with you when you leave the house? Write yourself a note, and leave it in a convenient location—preferably somewhere close to the action you need to take!

Make your morning great.

Incorporating just one or two of these simple tips into your routine can make it much easier to get ready in the mornings. Give it a try! Your future self will definitely thank you for it.
