What is Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction has been around for many years and has allowed for an even more effective way to achieve desired body contours by injecting a solution into the target areas of your body before fat removal. This solution, known as tumescent fluid, contains a mixture of saline, local anesthetic, and adrenaline. The fluid causes the fat cells to swell and become firm, making them easier to suction out—allowing for precision fat removal.

When you undergo tumescent liposuction, your plastic surgeon will make small incisions in the targeted areas, and a thin cannula is then inserted through these incisions to suction out the fat. The tumescent fluid not only facilitates the fat removal but also minimizes bleeding and bruising, leading to a smoother recovery process.

Tumescent liposuction has become the norm, but the industry is always evolving. When you come to North Texas Plastic Surgery, you can also benefit from the latest developments in body contouring technology – notably VASERlipo® and MicroAire PAL®, as well as BodyTite and Quantum RF for advanced skin tightening after the fat has been removed.

What Made Tumescent Liposuction Different From What Came Before?

While traditional liposuction relied on mechanical suction alone to remove fat, tumescent liposuction combined this suction with a specialized fluid that enhances the fat removal process.

Enhanced Safety and Comfort

The tumescent fluid contains a local anesthetic that numbs the target area, significantly reducing your discomfort during the procedure. This approach allows for a more comfortable patient experience and minimizes the need for general anesthesia.

Reduced Trauma

The use of the tumescent solution helps minimize bleeding and bruising by constricting blood vessels. This leads to less post-operative swelling and a faster recovery compared to traditional methods.

Improved Precision

The swelling effect of the tumescent fluid makes your fat cells easier to aspirate (remove), allowing us to achieve more precise and uniform results—helping you achieve smoother body contours.

What to Expect With Tumescent Liposuction

While you are under general anesthesia, our surgeons will begin by making small, discreet incisions in the areas you wish to treat. Through these incisions, they will inject the tumescent fluid to prepare the fat for removal. Once the fluid has settled, we begin the liposuction process. With VASERlipo®, the results will be even more dramatic than what traditional liposuction can provide, and our team uses Quantum RF or BodyTite to tighten the loose skin at the same time. It’s an all-in-one surgical session that takes lipo to the next level!

Will I Need Drains Inserted?

If you are getting liposuction in your abdomen, the presence of tumescent fluid also means you will need to have drains inserted for a few days to address the loose fluid, but this is only a small inconvenience when you see how this method provides more dramatic changes! Liposuction only in the arms, thighs, or other areas besides the abdomen will not require drains.
