According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Inc. (AAFPRS), the growing popularity of selfies is having quite an impact on the plastic surgery industry.
Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat make it possible and popular to post countless images of yourself. As these platforms continue to explode in popularity, people are beginning to take their selfies to the next level. With a little bit of plastic surgery or simple skin procedures, selfie-takers are enhancing their best features to make their selfies stand out.
A study conducted by the AAFPRS recently revealed that one in three facial plastic surgeons in the U.S. has seen an increase in patients who request procedures based on their interactions with social media. These patients make appointments in plastic surgeons’ offices everywhere to discuss their dissatisfaction with how they appear on social media.
Who’s getting plastic surgery?
The face of plastic surgery is getting younger. In fact, in 2013 more than half of facial plastic surgeons surveyed reported that they experienced an increase in the number of patients they saw who were under the age of 30. Because of their frequent and in-depth interactions with social media platforms, the younger generations are often more familiar with the shapes, sizes, and colors of their own images. Because their friends and family members also have access to their images, they want to impress as well.
Plastic surgery and selfies: What are the most popular selfie-inspired procedures?
In order to achieve the selfies they desire and enhance their lives on- and offline, selfie-takers opt for various facial plastic surgery procedures. What do they want to enhance? The study saw a 10% increase in rhinoplasties, a 7% increase in hair transplants, and a 6% increase in eyelid surgeries between the years of 2012 and 2013.
Both men and women are becoming more aware of their appearances due to the selfie craze. Once posted online, selfies are open to comments and likes, which can be positive or negative. However, it’s important to remember that real life is more important than virtual life.
