Dr. Manisundaram (Dr. Mani for short!) originally grew up in Mississippi. He first began his initial tour of Texas by attending Rice University for his undergraduate training, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude with induction into the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He then made his first move to Dallas, where he obtained his medical degree at UT Southwestern.
While Dr. Mani has continued to focus on honing his skills as a surgeon, he has strived to balance this with mentorship and education. His commitment to teaching medical students and fellow residents were recognized throughout his training, with awards such as the Gold Foundation Humanism award, Resident Teacher of the Year award, and Best Overall Resident award. Furthermore, when counseling patients, he has enjoyed drawing from his experience as a personal trainer to help patients attain their own personal goals. Dr. Mani is a fully-trained, board-eligible plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and he is also board-certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
Outside of surgery, Dr. Mani enjoys spending time with his wife, a colorectal surgeon practicing in Ft Worth. They spend their free time sampling the various restaurants in the DFW area, exercising, and traveling both within the US and abroad.
Dr. Mani was always drawn toward surgery – the combination of functional anatomy with disease, and the ability of surgeons to physically address and even cure patients fascinated him. Following medical school, Dr. Mani spent a year in San Antonio doing general surgery, and he then moved to Buffalo, New York, to complete his general surgery residency. There, he focused on learning the full breadth of general surgery, from robotic/minimally invasive surgery to surgical oncology, vascular, and trauma surgery specialties. Yet, the procedures that most fascinated him were those in plastic surgery – where a variety of reconstructive techniques were utilized to help restore patient’s function as well as appearance.
At the completion of his general surgery residency, he went on to complete a highly competitive, three-year fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UT Health Science Center in Houston. Here, he received extensive training in the fields of aesthetic surgery, microsurgery, craniofacial surgery, and hand/facial trauma. While he focused on becoming a well-rounded plastic surgeon, Dr. Mani had a natural interest in being mindful of the aesthetics of each procedure in addition to the functional outcome. This became further developed during his chief fellowship year, where gained exposure to rhinoplasties, facelifts, and breast/body contouring procedures under the tutelage of some of the busiest leaders in the field.
