Gynecomastia is the overdevelopment or enlargement of breasts in boys or men. It can occur at any age, and can be genetic, related to hormonal imbalance, or a side effect of steroid use, marijuana use, or certain prescription drugs.
For those patients that have a hormonal imbalance, it is the result of asymmetry in the production of testosterone and estrogen. Every one of us – male or female – produces testosterone and estrogen. Testosterone primarily controls “male” traits such as muscle mass, while estrogen primarily controls “female” traits such as breast development. Some men produce lower levels of testosterone or higher levels of estrogen, resulting in the pronounced appearance of breasts.
This hormonal imbalance can be caused by several factors, including puberty, aging, certain medications, underlying medical conditions, or substance abuse. While your physician may be able to provide treatment for the underlying cause, this treatment may not be able to change the appearance of enlarged breasts. That’s where we can help!
Working out your chest muscles with weight lifting, bench pressing, and push-ups sounds like it could tone your breast tissue, right? Unfortunately, not only will chest exercises fail to tone and shape the chest muscles, it will actually push them out and emphasize them even more. The only way to remove the excess fat safely and effectively is through surgical intervention. Liposuction and excisional gynecomastia surgery are two of the most popular and effective surgical methods to treat enlarged male breasts.
In this procedure, small, carefully-concealed incisions are created on the chest and armpit, through which the excess fat and tissue is removed. Our surgeons then sculpt and define your chest muscles with new contours that are designed to look natural. For some patients undergoing liposuction, there is a small amount of tissue right behind the nipple that requires additional excision.
At our in-office surgical facility, we use an ultrasound-assisted liposuction technology called VASER, which provides smoother results. This technology allows us to safely extract a much higher volume of fat, while resulting in less bruising and bleeding compared to traditional liposuction. We also use BodyTite to help tighten any remaining skin. BodyTite will heat the skin to 160 degrees from the underside causing a 35% skin retraction, which is critical to ensure that no loose skin remains after gynecomastia correction.
Liposuction generally requires a very quick downtime of a few days, after which you can begin to return to work and daily life. However, high-impact activity will have to be avoided for at least three weeks while you heal. You will also be advised to wear a compression garment during your healing time.
For dramatic reduction of breast tissue and fat, a surgical breast reduction, also known as excisional gynecomastia surgery, might be the preferred option. Surgery is also a way to eliminate any sagging or stretched skin around the chest area, which can be tightened and reshaped. One of our plastic surgeons will choose incision sites carefully to conceal scarring, and can reshape or reposition the nipples to make your results look as natural as possible. The recovery time for surgery is typically a few weeks of rest, during which you should avoid heavy physical activity.
Without an in-person consultation, it is hard to say which procedure is best for your needs. Some gynecomastia cases respond better to liposuction, and others, typically more severe cases, respond better to surgical excision. In some cases, you may benefit from a combination of both treatments. Schedule a consultation at our Dallas, Plano, or Southlake office to discuss whether liposuction or surgical removal is a better response to your gynecomastia.
