Telangiectasias, more commonly known as spider veins, is a condition in which small, fiber-like veins become dilated and appear close to the surface of the skin. Generally blue, red, or purple, spider veins are a lesser form of varicose veins, which are veins that have filled with pools of blood because of poor circulation. Spider veins are an embarrassing aesthetic condition as they spread out in web-like clusters along the thighs, feet, ankles, and calves.
At North Texas Plastic Surgery, we offer treatment for the reduction of spider veins so you don’t have to feel uncomfortable showing your legs to the world. By using laser treatment with the Nd: YAG module of the M22™ modular multi-application machine, we can address this unsightly skin condition and help you feel better about the way your legs look.
If you have spider veins and want to learn more about this treatment, please contact North Texas Plastic Surgery today by filling out the form on this page or by calling us at 817-416-8080 to schedule your complimentary consultation. We happily provide services to those who live in and near Dallas, Plano, and Southlake, Texas.
How Does the Nd: YAG Work?
As part of the M22™ modular multi-application machine from Lumenis®, the Nd: YAG module works by using light energy that is delivered in pulses to safely reduce and eliminate vascular lesions like spider veins. This technology enables our physicians to use the light source in targeted areas to treat vascular conditions on the legs and cause them to fade away.
Because of its ability to target specific areas for treatment, there is little worry about surrounding areas of skin, tissue, or veins being affected or damaged. The Nd: YAG module uses multiple sequential pulsing with four easily changed lighguides which allow the device to deliver a sequence of pulses of energy that cool between successions of pulses. This allows the device to be used on nearly all skin types, including darker skin while limiting pain and the chances of unwanted side-effects.
The benefits of this treatment include:
- Non-invasive treatment
- Immediate, noticeable results for many
- Little downtime
Spider veins, along with varicose veins, affect both men and women at any age. However, women who are of childbearing age and older generally develop spider veins more frequently, especially those who have a family history of the condition.
This non-invasive treatment creates visible results that many will see immediately, with full improvement after several weeks as the veins slowly fade away. In the case of multiple veins or areas in need of treatments, multiple sessions spread over a period of one to two-month intervals may be necessary.
Candidates for Nd: YAG Treatment
As with any plastic surgery treatment, even non-invasive ones, it’s important to understand that there are certain qualifications one must have to be an ideal candidate for treatment. This is to ensure the safety and efficacy of the treatment. While spider veins are generally a cosmetic concern and don’t have physical symptoms, it’s still important to have a consultation to evaluate your candidacy.
Our Harvard-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sacha Obaid will go over all points of this treatment with you during your consultation. He’ll also make sure that you’re medically cleared to have this procedure so that you can enjoy safe results for your spider vein removal.
Some factors that may inhibit you from being an ideal candidate include:
- Having any active infections
- Having a viral, fungal, or bacterial disease
- Having any inflammatory skin conditions
We recommend talking with our doctor about any and all ailments you have during your consultation. He will also go over all pre- and post treatment instructions with you to make sure that this treatment is as successful as possible for your aesthetic goals.
